The Participants
The Summer Outreach programme runs every year from the end of
July to mid-August. It attracts people from a variety of
backgrounds. About 70% of participants have been students.
Consequently, we have kept the cost down. This does not mean
that we have compromised on anything. Participants fall mainly
in two categories: those who have a burden to evangelise and
don't know how to but are keen to learn; those who have plenty
of time in the summer months and would like to do some kind of
Christian work.
Programme
The programme has remained the same for the past four years
because we believe it meets the needs of the participants. It is
a blanaced programme combining the theoretical with the
practical. It offers everyone something.
Every day begins with devotional teaching. The mornings of
the first week are taken up with seminars on different topics
such as open air evangelism, home visitation, apologetics, other
religions and children's work. The afternoons are given to
practicing what we learned in the seminars. This approach lets
participants to gain valuable experince in evangelism. We have
found this 'hands-on' method to be most suitable for those who
have no experience of evangelism. There are two sessions for
prayers and feedback. The second week's programme concentrates
on children's work. For those who whould rather not do
children's work, we have arranged for them to engage in other
kinds of Christian work. We work with a church in the second
week. The BCM Bus plays a major part in our programme during the
second week. In the evenings of both weeks there are
opportunities to do homeless work - feeding and sharing the
Gospel with the homeless in the city centre.
Social Life
Built into the programme are recreation times and barbecues.
They are great times of friendship and getting to know each
other. The participants live together and so spend much time
with each other. At night they congregate in the large kitchen
to chat, play, eat or just relax and enjoy one another's
company.
Cost
The cost for a week is £75 and includes accommodation,
transport and food. |
