Volunteering - The Gift of Time

Become a volunteer for BCM ... help us fulfil our mission

There are so many opportunities to volunteer in BCM and we really need your help.  Come and meet new people, experience new things and help those in need. You can make a difference in our city.

Resource Centre
  • sorting and preparing clothing
  • collecting and delivering furniture
  • sorting goods for Basics Bank
  • answering telephones
  • admin
  • booking deliveries

The BCM Resource Centre is a vital support to all departments and to BCM’s shop.  People in need can receive clothing furniture, bedding and food. The Basics Bank project helps people out of the debt trap. We supply clients with a quantity of tinned food and household commodities each week for a set period of time, thus releasing capital to pay off debts.

Elderlink
  • practical & befriending work at lunch clubs
  • home and hospital visiting
  • drivers/couriers
  • interesting speakers
  • cleaning

ElderLink provides a visiting service to 300 elderly people in the areas of the areas of Acocks Green, Yardley, Hay Mills and Sheldon. We also visit Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals on Friday afternoons. There are weekly lunch clubs - on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Elderlink Centre in Acocks Green and on Tuesday at Hodge Hill Gospel Church. Clients have a cooked lunch followed by a Christian message or activity such as music/craft. Many of the clients have to be collected by minibus or car.

Evangelism
  • bus drivers
  • youth workers
  • extra help for Lord Mayor's Show
  • door-to-door work
  • open air work

Every Tuesday and Saturday, come rain or shine, the Evangelistic team can be found sharing the Gospel in the City Centre.  We use a number of means, including straight preaching, sketchboard work and question and answer, to make people aware of their greatest need. Regular door-to-door work also takes place in local areas.

Bus Team
  • bus drivers
  • youth workers

The BCM Double Decker Bus systematically visits estates with shopping centres on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is also used at schools to introduce children to fun-filled curriculum based subjects and provides a novel and attractive environment for lessons on drug abuse. We use exhibitions as a means of attracting the public on to the vehicle. Opportunities like carnivals, shows, youth events and church anniversaries are regularly booked into the diary.

Shop
  • assistants
  • listening ears
  • ironing
  • pricing
  • cleaning

The shop is much more than just somewhere to buy. It also aims to provide hope and care for the community. For some people there is an opportunity for conversations of a spiritual nature and for others there is a place where their problems may be shared with sympathetic ears and where they know they will receive practical help.

Head Office
  • envelope stuffing
  • office work

Volunteers put our prayer letter and other literature into envelopes each month. There's plenty of time to chat as you work! The busy office at the headquarters is always grateful for people willing to help in general office duties.

Special Events
  • sorting and wrapping toys at Christmas
  • at ElderLink and the Care Centre during the Christmas and Easter period
  • collecting, sorting & delivering at Harvest
  • camp leaders in the summer
At Christmas thousands of donated toys are sorted, wrapped, packed and distributed to nearly a thousand families. At Christmas and Easter at Elderlink and the Care Centre special meals are provided. At Harvest time all the incoming goods at the Resource Centre have to be sorted in date order and then hundreds of food parcels are delivered to elderly people. In the summer we take about 40 streetwise children away on camp.
