Recycling lives as well as furniture ....

The Resource Centre has a wide remit. It’s not just about recycling furniture, but about recycling people’s lives. It’s about seeing the potential in people. It’s about giving people hope and a chance to live. It’s about being interested in people and being part of a team.

The Resource Centre has a very committed team of staff and very valuable volunteers, dedicated to helping people. With a non-judgmental attitude we try to be Jesus Christ in all that we do.

Functions

The BCM Resource Centre is located just down the street from Washington Court, near to the centre of Birmingham. It has several functions, these being:

  • collection and distribution of furniture, clothing and bedding to those in need

  • sorting of items to go to the Care shop for sale to the general public

  • the building up of volunteers, many of whom are ex-homeless

  • and discipling those who have become Christians through the work itself

  • Basics Bank debt relief scheme.

Throughout the year we are continually overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people who supply us with food, clothing and furniture.

During the past year we have...

  • collected over 2,000 items of furnitrue and electrical appliances;

  • given away or sold 1,800 items;

  • sorted 3 tons of clothing;

  • given away over 10 tons of tinned food.

Not to mention all the people who we meet on a day to day basis who come in all sorts of conditions to buy, have a chat, be given stuff or to be counselled.

General running

General running of the centre can be somewhat troublesome because of the backgrounds of many volunteers. It's not unusual for someone to just not turn up. After not having a job for so long some people take time to readjust to having a working schedule. Our vehicles are constantly on the road clocking up miles. Storage space and maintaining a balanced warehouse are constant issues.

Volunteers

There is always a great need for volunteers all year round but particularly during Harvest and Christmas when the work load is increased incredibly by the shear volume of food and toys from schools and churches all needing sorting. Imagine what your church or school gives then multiply it by several hundred....that's how much we deal with!
